Peak UK visit – New Viking A kit – February
We started the year with new kit for our Viking A team from our sponsor Peak UK. The attractive new design simplified the colours of the club and displays the initials “PJM” in homage to our late founder Peter Mitchell MBE.
Peak UK have developed a high-quality vest deck which is bespoke to each paddler and provided the team with custom printed rash vests which ensures a coherent and professional look for the team.
The whole of Viking Canoe Polo Club is grateful for Peak UK’s continued support from youth to senior level. We look forward to representing the Peak UK brand and continuing working together again in the future.
New & Improved Website – July
This year we relaunched our website with a new look and the plan to keep you more up to date on events, competitions and team news as it happens. This update should help you learn everything you need to know about Viking Canoe Polo.
GB Euro Selection for Viking Players – August
GB selection came for 2 of our Viking A Team players, Ross Montgomery and Chris Underwood. They were selected for the 2019 ECA European Canoe Polo Championships in Coimbra, Portugal to represent Great Britain in the Men’s and Under 21 Men’s teams. The 2019 ECA European Canoe Polo Championships took place between the 26th of August and the 1st of September.

Amazing Results in Coimbra – September
Ross Montgomery got Silver with the GB Men’s team and Chris Underwood got 11th with the Under 21 GB Men’s team. Elsewhere in the competition, the GB Women became the 2019 European Champions and the Under 21 GB Women also impressed this year by placing 2nd and winning silver. Over the competition, both of our boys scored 6 times each for Great Britain.
We are immensely proud of both Ross and Chris here at Viking!
Kinder Scout for PJM – September
On Saturday the 7th of September, many members of Viking Canoe Polo Club joined former Viking Venture Scout Unit (VVU) members from the Nags Head to the Trig Point at 590 m Grid Ref SK 129 878 on the East side of Kinder Scout. This journey, in which some VVU members make every year as part of their Trig race, had a different purpose this year as it was a chance to remember our late founder and chairman, Peter Mitchell MBE, who sadly passed away in 2017.
Peter Mitchell 4-aside Tournament – January 2020
At the beginning of next year we have big plans for Viking by starting our own 4-aside Canoe Polo tournament, Open & Youth, in memory of our late founder Peter Mitchell MBE, on Saturday the 4th of January 2020, 9am-6pm at Queen’s Leisure Centre, Derby.
Pete always believed in playing 4-aside in smaller pools throughout the winter and we thought that this would be a good way to honour and remember his legacy. Our event will be sponsored by Peak UK.
Free for spectators, we hope to see you on the day to kick start your 2020 with us at Viking Canoe Polo.
Whats next for Viking – 2020
Next year, apart from our new Peter Mitchell 4-aside Tournament, Viking will be busy with teams within the British National Canoe Polo League, across 3 divisions. Some of our members will have their shot at GB selection for the 2020 ICF Canoe Polo World Championships in Rome, Italy. We plan on attending more national and international tournaments as a club, and keeping you all up to date throughout 2020!
