On Saturday the 7th of September, many members of Viking Canoe Polo Club joined former Viking Venture Scout Unit (VVU) members from the Nags Head to the Trig Point at 590 m Grid Ref SK 129 878 on the East side of Kinder Scout.
This journey, in which some VVU members make every year as part of their Trig race, had a different purpose this year as it was a chance to remember our late founder and chairman, Peter John Mitchell MBE, who sadly passed away in 2017.
From 1968 to 2004, Pete led the VVU and was a very influential member within Scouting. At the Trig Point, there has been a commemorative plaque for VVU since 2012 and on Saturday the 7th, it also became the final resting place for Peter Mitchell’s ashes.
It was wonderful to see so many there, and we hope that some of you will join us next year on the 12th September (walk 1pm race 2pm, both from nags head) all welcome to join the race or walk – many of us camp. If anyone wants to join the mailing list, email ben.bellamy@prospect.org.uk
I am also trying to use my council hat to sort out an outside canoe polo tournament at Belper River gardens, and get proper river access for canoes to launch from the car park. Its what Pete would have wanted.
