Over the past week, two of our Viking A boys have been at the 2019 ECA European Canoe Polo Championships in Coimbra, Portugal representing Great Britain.
For the 10th year in a row, Ross Montgomery has represented Great Britain in the GB Men’s team, with this year him being a part of a team comprising of half newly aged up under 21 men’s players. After finishing top of their groups, the GB Men beat Poland 7-2 in a semi-final to then reach a final against the German Men. During a captivating final, Ross scored the first goal of the game and the only goal for GB with Germany equalising in the second half. With the game looking as if it would go to golden goal, in the last minute, Germany scored again, making them 2019 European Champions and meaning that Great Britain came 2nd and won Silver. A great result for the Great Britain Men’s team.

In Chris Underwood’s first year representing Great Britain in the Under 21 Men’s team, he joined a team of majority first timers going into this European Championship. After a tough group stage, the Under 21 Men’s team were fighting for 11th place against Denmark’s Under 21 Men and came out on top, winning 4-2. Over the competition, both of our boys scored 6 times each for Great Britain. We are immensely proud of both Ross and Chris here at Viking!

Elsewhere in the competition, the GB Women became the 2019 European Champions on a golden goal against the German Women, in a thrilling final. The Under 21 GB Women also impressed this year by placing 2nd and winning silver after a game against the Under 21 German Women, breaking a stretch of placing fourth.
