Peter John Mitchell MBE, Viking Canoe Polo’s founder, chairman, treasurer and coach, passed away on the 2nd of October 2017.
Born on the 11th of May 1947, Pete was a very influential member in Scouting and from 1968 to 2004, he led the successful and large Viking Venture Scout Unit based in Allestree. Since the mid 1980s he created Viking Canoe Polo (V-Unit) and has been the running force behind the club ever since, taking on a lot of the clubs necessary roles. In this time he has taken the club from strength to strength.
Pete also spent a lot of his time managing Great Britain’s National Canoe Polo squads. When the first Great Britain Men’s Under 21 team was formed, Pete became team manager and 2 years later, in 1994, subsequently became team manager and co-ordinator for the GB Men’s, Women’s and Under 21 squads.
His funeral will be held at Derby Cathedral on Friday the 20th of October at 2pm.
